Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Where can I find info about pickleball rules?

A: Simply click the “Pickleball Rules” link found on all pages of this website or click this link: Pickleball Rules.

We adhere to the Pickleball rules adopted by the USA Pickleball.

Q: Do I need partner(s) to play?

A: No, all play is in doubles that are formed and changed in an open play format. There is no scheduled singles play, nor is it allowed during scheduled pickleball sessions. Note that some locations and times tend to be populated by players at different skill levels, so visit different locations to see where you best fit in or ask one of the two DC Ambassadors.

Q: How do I know what level I should compete?

A: Refer to the skill ratings explanations on this website using this link: Pickleball Skill Ratings.

Q: What are the benefits of being a member of Washington DC Pickleball?

A: WDCP works to enhance the enjoyment, health, and social engagement of all amateur pickleball participants through organized recreational and competitive play, player development opportunities and improvement of facilities within DC.

WDCP works closely with the Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) to develop and expand pickleball venues, including reserved play times, tournaments, and social events. Through DPR, we have some dedicated courts for year-round play, and we have other sites where access is shared with tennis players.

As a non-profit organization, WDCP formally advocates on behalf of the local amateur pickleball community with DPR and the DC government for facility upkeep and improvements.

WDCP organizes and sponsors social activities for members and families, offers clinics for players to learn the strategy of the game, and keeps members informed through our website and social media.

Benefits include access to training clinics, pro workshops, socials, promotional/charitable events, leagues, ladders, and online discounts.

Q: Is there a best place for beginners to play?

A: Typically, after you have had two to four introductory lessons, depending on your starting point and speed of learning, you can play at any one of the locations. Times vary by site. As a member, you can also join one of the software-aided meet-up groups to arrange play with others at a similar level to you.
